The UK has been called a “freak show” by a senior figure in the Russian foreign ministry after the arrest and release under investigation of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
Speaking for the Kremlin, foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova alleged that the UK establishment was “paying the price” for looking the other way for so many years.
Her remarks mark a rare instance of Moscow directly commenting on an internal controversy involving the British Royal Family.
Zakharova said in an interview with Russian state media, “Look at what’s happening in Britain now.
“It’s truly a freak show, God forgive me….Look at what’s happening there.
“A member of the royal family, a man who made not just decisions, but was empowered to implement British policy both domestically and internationally….They seemed to distance themselves from him, stripped him of some titles, and then took him to the police station for a few hours.
“True, they later released him. What does this mean?”
She added, “It means they had this man right under their noses, under the noses of MI5 and MI6, British intelligence and special services, and they were perfectly aware of what he was doing.
“Because, of course, they tap all phones, they tap and spy on members of their elite, of course.”
Zakharova continued, “We remember how the wiretaps of Charles, Prince [now King] Charles, were periodically published, and so on.
“They’re engaged in intrigue, they use various materials. They knew what he was doing, and they covered it up.
“At the same time, the ‘heinous scum’ in Britain “invented stories about Russia being bad, expelled our diplomats.”
She said, the UK has “destroyed bilateral relations between people, between states, between societies.”
She then said, “they have been concocting myths about Russia, about the alleged threat, about crimes that we, as they claimed, allegedly committed on their territory.
“Meanwhile, for so many years, all this scum was nesting right inside their communities, right at the heart of them, in the most luxurious districts of New York, London, and other European capitals, and in the United States of America.”
She continued, the Epstein files show the “real criminals, real ghouls were comfortable inside the Western society.
“They were involved in all sorts of heinous crimes: corruption, human trafficking, forced prostitution, false imprisonment, and paedophilia, you name it.”
