Special operations units of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine, part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, carried out infiltration and sabotage missions against Russian military positions in the northern operational sector, according to military command statements reported by RBC-Ukraine.
In the North-Slobozhanskyi operational direction, Ukrainian special forces reportedly entered Russian rear areas and planted explosives at accumulation points along a route used by Russian troops.
Aerial reconnaissance identified the movement corridor and staging areas used by Russian forces.
Military planners applied the METT-TC operational risk assessment framework, concluding that a conventional ambush would expose the special forces team to excessive danger.
Instead, operators infiltrated enemy rear positions, deployed explosive devices, and withdrew safely after execution, demonstrating effective planning and execution despite inherent risks.
The explosion was reported to have destroyed Russian personnel and disrupted an infiltration route used by advancing forces in that sector, underscoring the strategic significance of Ukrainian special operations.
In January, operators from the 8th Regiment of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces conducted a strategic operation in Kupiansk, Kharkiv Oblast, aimed at disrupting Russian logistics and command structures, thereby supporting Ukraine’s broader defensive efforts.
During reconnaissance of the city centre, Ukrainian forces identified Russian soldiers occupying positions inside a damaged supermarket and an adjacent residential structure.

According to Ukrainian military reports, direct action resulted in the deaths of Russian personnel, with two soldiers captured.
Ukrainian special forces also claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Russian air defence systems in Crimea, including the destruction of an S-400-class system and a Pantsir-S1-type system, which are critical for Russian air superiority in the region.
In addition, Ukrainian forces released video material purportedly showing the destruction of a Russian artillery ammunition depot in Luhansk Oblast, a region currently under Russian occupation.
Military analysts say such operations are consistent with Ukraine’s broader strategy of:
- Disrupting Russian supply and movement networks
- Degrading air defence coverage
- Conducting high-value target strikes behind front lines
- Applying asymmetric warfare tactics against numerically superior forces
Special operations forces are generally deployed for reconnaissance, sabotage, and precision direct action rather than sustained front-line combat.
The operations occur amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has seen extensive use of hybrid warfare, long-range strikes, and special forces activity by both sides.
Ukrainian officials say such missions help slow Russian advances and increase the cost of offensive operations.
