Activision has unveiled a new battle royale experience for Call of Duty Warzone called Black Ops Royale, a mode designed to revive the survival based gameplay of the original Blackout from Call of Duty Black Ops 4.

The new mode is free to play and launches on March 12, bringing a fresh map, new mechanics, and updated systems for modern Warzone players.

Unlike traditional Warzone matches, Black Ops Royale removes several familiar mechanics. Players will not have loadouts, buy stations, Gulag respawns, or in-game cash.

Everyone begins the match with only a pistol and wingsuit, forcing squads to search the map for weapons, armor, and equipment in order to survive. The design shifts the focus back to scavenging, positioning, and squad tactics instead of custom loadouts.

A return to survival-style battle royale gameplay

Black Ops Royale drops up to 100 players into a new, large-scale map called Avalon, where squads compete to be the last team standing.

Players deploy using wingsuits and must quickly explore the map to gather gear, upgrade weapons, and secure stronger equipment before rival squads do.

Avalon is described as a varied and expansive environment that includes historic towns, coastal defenses, casinos, and excavation areas designed for long-range combat and strategic movement.

The map also includes waterways, tidal flats, and vehicles that allow players to travel across land and water while staying ahead of the shrinking battle zone known as the Collapse.

Weapons follow a rarity-based loot system that upgrades gear with additional attachments as players find better loot. Equipment from classic Blackout gameplay also returns, including tools such as grappling hooks, sensor darts, and trauma kits.

The new mode introduces special events called Cradle Breaches. These areas fill with red gas and spawn zombie hordes while offering some of the best loot on the map. Players who enter these zones can fight a Mangle Boss and unlock Mystery Boxes for high-value loot.

Black Ops Royale also ties into Black Ops 7 progression through challenges, missions, and unlockable rewards, positioning the mode as a major addition to the evolving Warzone experience.

Meanwhile, if you still play COD: Warzone on mobile, you only have a few weeks left to play as the game is set to shut down on April 17, 2026.
