Ukrainian prosecutors have launched a significant war crimes investigation following grave allegations that Russian troops shot and killed four Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Kharkiv region, a situation that Kyiv condemns as a severe violation of the Geneva Conventions.

According to a statement from Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office, the troubling incident occurred on April 11 near the village of Veterynarne.

It is reported that Russian forces captured members of a Ukrainian mechanised brigade and subsequently opened fire on them while they were detained.

In response, a pretrial investigation has commenced, focusing on the mistreatment and unlawful killing of prisoners of war, overseen by the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office.

Ukrainian authorities have also referenced disturbing footage shared by DeepState, an open-source monitoring group, which appears to depict the tragic events of the incident.

However, it is crucial to note that this material has not been independently verified yet. DeepState reported that the video was received by their editors and indicated that Russian troops had penetrated Ukrainian positions prior to the deaths of the prisoners.

“Another video has been received by the editorial team. The Russians entered the positions through the neighbors,” DeepState wrote in the caption for the video.

If the claims are substantiated, they would significantly contribute to the mounting evidence presented by Ukrainian officials regarding widespread violations of international humanitarian law by Russian forces during the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman has previously stated that hundreds of captured Ukrainian personnel have lost their lives while in detention since the escalation of the full-scale invasion.

As of now, Russian authorities have refrained from making any public statements regarding these specific allegations. As with many claims emerging from the battlefield on both sides of this war, the full details remain unverified due to limited access to front-line areas.
