National Grid has raised the alarm warning that there “may be less generation available” this evening “to meet national electricity demand” meaning there could be powercuts.

National grid warned that this will come into effect from 7pm on Tuesday evening as appliances will be at their highest demand when people come home from work.

Phil Hewitt, director at Enappsys said this is “not super tight” but he warned “it is a small appetizer of tightness” with “much tighter days ahead” throughout this winter.

The National Grid website says, “The notices are intended to be a signal that the risk of a System Stress Event in the GB electricity network is higher than under normal circumstances.”

Fintan Slye, the executive director of the National Grid subsidiary said previously that he is “cautiously confident” National Grid supplies can meet energy demands throughout the winter months.

In October National Grid has warned that Brits could be forced to suffer with blackouts over the winter months should gas imports be reduced.

The UK is reliant on some imports of gas from countries in Europe and coal fired power stations are on standby.

John Pettigrew warned that the blackouts could take place between 4pm and 7pm in January and February on “really, really cold” days in the middle of winter.

The National Grid said, “In the unlikely event there is insufficient gas supply available in GB to meet demand, and should the market be unable to resolve the resultant imbalance, we have the tools required to ensure the safety and integrity of the gas system in the event of a Gas Supply Emergency.
