People are being told that they may have to make their own way to hospital, NHS England is warning as six more ambulance strikes are being considered.
Talks between the GMB and the Health Secretary have failed, and it is understood there will be another meeting next week where there will be discussions if strike action should escalate.
The chair of council at the British Medical Association (BMA) met with Steve Barclay on Thursday morning with medical unions.
Professor Philip Banfield told reporters after the meeting, “The tone was not confrontational, the tone was collaborative.
“The secretary of state was a consummate politician in listening mode. It’s what happens next that’s the important thing.”
He said that doctors feel that “no0one is listening to us” and they have now been driven to the point of discussing strike action.
He added, “We’ve got about six weeks, haven’t we, to sit down and try and resolve the situation.
“None of our doctors want to strike, they would prefer that this was resolved before we got into that situation.”
