The National Audit Office (NAO) has said that traders are to be hit with higher costs with a lot more paperwork due to Brexit and the government has spent around £4.7 billion so far, which was not necessary.

The independent public watchdog said it is “not clear” when the Brexit border checks will be in place and there is currently no timetable for the government to reach an “effective border” target.

The NAO said there is lack of certainty along with “repeated delays” to introduce import controls, this has led to more expense on infrastructure with staff which was “not needed.”
