The Westminster rumour mill is speculating that Rishi Sunak will call a general election on 4 July and Tory MPs have submitted letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister.

A senior Tory MP said the atmosphere in the tea room in Downing Street is total “panic” as rumour swirl of an election.

A senior Tory MP said that calling a general election now is “madness” whilst another said “everyone is mortified.”

Reports out today have suggested that three MPs submitted letters of no confidence in Sunak to Sir Graham Brady, the Chair of the 1922 Committee.

52 MPs or 15% of Conservatives would have to send letter of no confidence before the Tories could hold a leadership contest.

Sunak refused to rule out there will be a summer general election during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister said that the general election will happen in the second half of this year, whilst some believe the election could take place on 4 July.

SNP Westminster Leader Stephen Flynn told MPs in the House of Commons, “Speculation is rife, so I think the public deserve a clear answer to a simple question. Does the Prime Minister intend to call a summer general election or is he feart?”

Sunak replied, “There is, Mr Speaker, spoiler alert there is going to be a general election in the second half of this year.

“At that moment, the British people will in fact see the truth about the honourable gentleman opposite me (Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer), because that will be the choice at the next election, Mr Speaker – a party that is not able to say to the country what they would do, a party that would put at risk our hard-earned economic stability, or the Conservatives that are delivering a secure future for our United Kingdom.”
