The latest records from the Electoral Commission show that that the Liberal Democrats raised £335,000 in donations in the second week of the campaign.
This took their total donations towards election efforts to £789,999.
Contributors of note included businessman Safwan Adam who donated a cool
£150,000 to the party. Adam acquired his first franchise, CeX, at just 25 and has opened five more CeX’s across London. The qualified aeronautical engineer runs a multi-unit company over multiple brands including Right at Home. He has also opened a franchise for ‘GDK’- German Doner Kebab in the UK.
Another longstanding Lib Dem supporter was John Faulkner, the wealthy solicitor and property owner who left the party £1m in his will in 2023.
The polls don’t point towards a particularly convincing win for Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey, despite his political stunts including paddle boarding or rushing down a water slide.
Just a third (34%) of the public can identify the Lib Dem leader, according to a poll by YouGov. One in twenty (5%) stated that he was the leader of the Lib Dems, while 58% were not able to provide an answer at all.
Looking at the responses of those who intend to vote Liberal Democrat at the next election, the majority (59%) are able to identify Davey, and a further 5% are able to identify him as ‘the Lib Dem leader’. Nevertheless, this leaves 35% who are planning on backing the party without knowing who he is at all.
However, Davey has received support for his role in caring for his disabled son. He broke down in tears as he opened up on the struggles of parenting John, his 16-year-old who was born severely disabled.
In an interview with Sky News, released on 25 June, Mr Davey said: “We want to enable him to be as independent as possible and be the wonderful boy and man he can be.”
Davey praised the support of carers, before getting visibly emotional and bowing his head, adding: “No one is going to hold him like we do.”
Davey has served as Leader of the Liberal Democrats since 2020, having acted in the position from 2019 to 2020. He served in the Cameron–Clegg coalition as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change from 2012 to 2015 and as Deputy Leader to Jo Swinson in 2019.
Davey has also raised fingers at the Conservatives’ progress of taking action on issues such as migration in various media appearances.
They (the Conservatives) refuse to pay people properly and so they’ve issued hundreds of thousands of health care visas, so they’ve increased legal immigration,” he said.
“I’ve shown you a way where we wouldn’t need to do that,” Davey said.
