Experts at at the Auxilione consultancy have warned that from April 2023 energy prices could spike at as much as £6,000 per year for the average household.
Households are currently paying £1,971 and from October the energy price cap will rise to £3,500 and then will surpass £4,000 in January.
To prevent blackouts this winter households who have smart meters could be paid to turn off high-energy appliances at peak times.
It is understood the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) are preparing such plans to help ease the power grid to prevent blackouts for appliances such as tumble dryers and washing machines during the peak hours of 5pm to 8pm which could save as much as £6 per kWh.
A National Grid ESO spokesman said, “We are developing a new service that will be available for consumers to benefit from across this winter and will be announcing further information soon.”
The £6,089 figure, released by Energy consultants Auxilione warned that the £6,089 figure represents a five-fold increase on where bills were until April this year.
Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy at consumer advocates Which? said, “These projected hikes are eye-watering and millions of households will simply not be able to afford their energy bills without further financial support.
“The Government must take urgent further action. Businesses should also make sure customers are getting a good deal and those facing hardship are protected.”
Labour MP Thangam Debbonaire warned that “People are having to make unthinkable choices.”
