The Prime Minister has said on Monday that the Middle East “cannot endure” another year of war and said the situation in Gaza is “a living hell.”

Paying tribute to those who were murdered by Hamas on 7 October 2023, Sir Keir Starmer said that more than “1,000 people” were brutally “massacred.”

Starmer said today is a “day of sorrow” and the murder committed by Hamas last year was the worst since the Holocaust.

Starmer said that he can hardly “imagine” what the Palestinians are going through in Gaza as Israel continues to bomb the region.

He said that the “human toll amongst innocent civilians in Gaza is truly devastating” as almost 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in just one year.

Starmer added, “We stand with all innocent victims in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and beyond.

“And we stand with all communities here in the United Kingdom against hatred of Jews or Muslims.”

The Prime Minister said that the situation in Gaza is a “living hell, and it must end” as the Middle East is “close to the brink” of all-out war.

He called on all side to “now step back from the brink and find the courage of restraint.”

Starmer then suggested that there could be some sort of action against the Iranian Republican Guard Corps (IRGC).

Sir Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrats leader asked Starmer if the government will proscribe the IRGC.

The Prime Minister said, “We’re working at pace to identify further ways to deal with those threats, including those from the IRGC.

“Already more than 400 sanction designations against Iranian organisations and individuals are in place, and we continue to look at that important issue.”
