The Counterintelligence Service of the Security Service of Ukraine SSU has arrested two Chinese spies in Kyiv who attempted to “illegally export secret documentation.”

The two Chinese nationals were detained as they tried to smuggle out top secret documentation of Ukrainian RK-360MC Neptune cruise missiles the SSU announced on Wednesday.

A 24-year-old former student of Kyiv’s technical university and his father intended to illegally transfer the secret documentation to Chinese intelligence, the son was caught “red handed” the Ukrainian security services said.

In statement by the SSU and the Office of the Prosecutor General they jointly stated, “The Counterintelligence Service of the Security Service of Ukraine detained two citizens of the People’s Republic of China in Kyiv who were attempting to illegally export secret documentation on the Ukrainian RK-360MC Neptune missile system to China…

“The investigation established that one of the Chinese spies was a 24-year-old former student of one of Kyiv’s technical universities. He remained in Kyiv after being expelled in 2023 for academic failure.

“The other person involved is his father, who resided in China but periodically visited Ukraine to personally coordinate his son’s espionage activities.

The SSU added, “The SSU counterintelligence exposed the spy at the initial stage of his intelligence activities and detained him while he was receiving secret documents. The next step was to detain his father, who was supposed to pass on the secret information to the Chinese special services.”

The SSU said the father entered Ukraine on 7 July and had visited the Chinese embassy in the capital, Kyiv and both spies have been arrested under the suspicion of “espionage.”

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “We have received information that China is supplying weapons to the Russian Federation. And we are ready to talk about it in detail.

“Today, we have information from the security service, from intelligence, about gunpowder, artillery.”

This comes a day after President Zelensky place sanctions on five Chinese registered firms who have been accused of supplying components which have been found in Russian Shahed type drones which are attacking Ukraine every night.

China has been helping Vladimir Putin with his war effort to circumvent sanctions and Beijing is one of the largest suppliers of dual goods helping Putin with his stockpiles of weaponry.
