A road so full of U-turns, the Lib Dems are calling it ‘Keir Starmer Lane’ – London Business News | Londonlovesbusiness.com

Southwark Liberal Democrats have launched a campaign to address a Bermondsey road that is so beset by U-turns, they’ve dubbed it “Keir Starmer Lane”.

Drivers are frequently seen doing U-turns on West Lane in order to turn onto Jamaica Road towards Rotherhithe, as the right-hand turn from Southwark Park Road was removed three years ago.

The Liberal Democrats had previously managed to push for some smaller interventions to tackle the issue, but are now calling for the “common sense” solution, which they say is to re-open the right-hand turn.

In a video posted by the Southwark Liberal Democrats, Cllr Rachel Bentley slammed the route the council expects people to take – which directs drivers to “slalom” around a residential area with narrow streets and parked cars.

North Bermondsey Councillor Rachel Bentley said, “West Lane is so full of U-turns, it may as well be named Keir Starmer Lane.

But where Starmer’s recent U-turns have been driven by indecision and poor leadership, the U-turns here are caused by poorly consulted and implemented traffic schemes by our Labour council.

It makes absolutely no sense to send cars literally around the houses, so it’s no surprise that drivers end up using West Lane as a turning point. It’s non-sensical and frankly dangerous. Once again, Southwark Labour are driving residents around the bend!

More money is going to be spent on sorting this, but residents are rightly asking: isn’t the common sense solution to just re-open the right-hand turn from Southwark Park Road?”
