Adobe, the world leader in creative software, is further extending its move into artificial intelligence by releasing the mobile version of its Firefly app, enabling customers to create AI-powered images from their phones. Originally launched in March 2023 as a browser-based tool, Firefly has matured into a complete creative toolbox driven by Adobe’s own AI models trained only on licensed and public domain material. This business safety positioning gives Adobe a distance from many of its competitors, allowing professionals and companies to use images generated with confidence without restriction.

The new mobile app gives users access to Adobe’s AI features, such as text-to-image creation, fill and path generation with generative fill, and background expansion. These capabilities, which desktop users already enjoy in Photoshop and Illustrator, are now delivered in an optimized, mobile-first package that integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud. The core app is part of the regular $10/month subscription, giving customers unlimited access to Adobe’s base model. Access to upgraded partner models, however, will come at the cost of buying additional credits.

In another big news, Adobe also announced Firefly will support external AI models from industry leaders such as OpenAI (presumably DALL·E), Google (Imagen and Veo), Ideogram, Luma AI, Pika Labs, and Runway. These integrations are designed to provide creators with creative freedom—while Adobe itself is dedicated to its guarantee of commercially safe results through its own models.

Firefly Boards, Adobe’s AI moodboard-style interface, will serve as the hub for combining outputs from various models, letting users mix, compare, and iterate. Although the mobile app will not include these external models immediately, they are expected to be rolled out in the coming months.

This release demonstrates Adobe’s plan to remain at the forefront of quickly developing creative AI with a hybrid of security and flexibility. By placing strong generative technology in consumers’ pockets, Adobe is hoping for a future where mobile-first creativity is the new standard and AI-created content is both professional-grade and legally sound.
