Households throughout the UK are advised to get ready for harsh winter conditions, as the Met Office has issued snow and strong wind warnings for this weekend.
A yellow weather warning for snow will be in effect in Scotland from 3 PM on Saturday until 6 AM on Sunday, with forecasts indicating that parts of the north-west could see accumulations of up to 20 cm.
Separate warnings for strong winds have been issued across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with concerns that Storm Dave could cause significant disruptions, including potential power outages. There is also a risk of flooding, as some areas may receive up to 50 mm of rain.
British Gas has offered advice to help households reduce the effects of the cold snap. Homeowners are encouraged to improve insulation by sealing gaps around windows and doors, and to safeguard pipes by using insulating tubing on exposed pipework linked to boilers and water systems.
The company also stresses the importance of testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, especially for those using indoor heating sources such as log burners. Residents are advised to locate their stopcock in advance in case they need to quickly shut off the water supply following a burst pipe.
While widespread heating outages are not expected, households are advised to prepare for potential disruption. British Gas recommends keeping warm clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags readily accessible, as well as assembling an emergency kit containing at least three days’ worth of non-perishable food, drinking water, and essential medications. Additionally, torches, spare batteries, and phone chargers should be kept handy in case of power cuts.
Drivers are also warned to ensure their vehicles are winter-ready before travelling. Checks should include brakes, tyres, heaters, and windscreen wipers, as hazardous conditions are anticipated in the affected areas.
British Gas said: “When severe weather hits, you might find yourself stranded away from home.
“So plan how you’ll stay in contact with the rest of your household and where you’ll meet if you can’t get home due to heavy snow… Check in on elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours to make sure they’ve got everything they need to get through a cold snap”
