French cybercrime authorities searched Elon Musk’s social media X offices in France on Tuesday and they have summoned the tech billionaire to a “voluntary interview.”

Paris public prosecutors’ office said the operation involved EU police agency Europol as part of a probe which started in 2025 to find out if X’s algorithm Grok can be used to interfere with French politics.

The prosecutors said in a statement, “Summons for voluntary interviews on April 20, 2026, in Paris have been sent to Mr. Elon Musk and Ms. Linda Yaccarino, in their capacity as de facto and de jure managers of the X platform at the time of the events.”

In January 2025, Laurent Buanec, France director of X said that the social media platform has strict, clear and public rules,” this protects X from hate speech and political disinformation.

In July the US said they will defend free speech of all Americans against “acts of foreign censorship,” X said at the time the investigation is “politically motivated.”

The prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday, “At this stage, the conduct of this investigation is part of a constructive approach, with the aim of ultimately ensuring that the X platform complies with French laws, insofar as it operates on national territory.”
