Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine was hit with at least three direct hits at one of the six reactors which risks a “major nuclear accident.”

On Sunday the United Nation’s atomic watchdog confirmed the attack and Moscow has blamed Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that world leaders should condemn the act of “nuclear terrorism,” Kyiv has denied attacking their own power plant.

Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s HUR military intelligence, said, “Russian strikes, including imitation ones, on the territory of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant … have long been a well known criminal practice of the invaders.”

“The aggressor state is once again endangering the nuclear facility, civilians and the environment of the whole of Europe,” he added.

The head of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi said, “I firmly appeal to military decision makers to abstain from any action violating the basic principles that protect nuclear facilities.”

“One casualty reported. Damage at unit six has not compromised nuclear safety, but this is a serious incident with potential to undermine integrity of the reactor’s containment system,” the IAEA added.

Grossi described the attack at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant as “reckless” which has sparked a “major escalation” after three “direct hits.”

The IAEA said their expert were informed of the drone attack and added, that “such detonation is consistent with IAEA observations.”

The IAEA said, “Damage at unit 6 has not compromised nuclear safety, but this is a serious incident with potential to undermine integrity of the reactor’s containment system.”
