The former US ambassador to Russia has said President Donald Trump is “courting” Vladimir Putin which will have “terrible implications” for America

Michael McFaul said that as far he can see there is “no evidence” Trump is serious about ensuring there is peace in Ukraine.

Sky News reported that McFaul warned there could be implications for security interests not just for Europe but globally.

“Trying to appease Putin and abandon our democratic partners in Ukraine will have terrible implications for American security interests not just in Europe, but also worldwide,” he warned.

“The president has a lot of authority over foreign policy, but we are not a monarchy,” McFaul added, “Remember that protestors against the Vietnam War helped to change US foreign policy.

“It is time for Americans to stand up again and say no to Trump’s embrace of autocratic Russia.”
