The French government has collapsed following the Prime Minister Michel Barnier losing a vote of no confidence.

Barnier used special powers to for through a social security budget in the lower house of Parliament with no final votes.

The last concession did not meet enough to win support from Marine Le Pens populist far-right National Rally (RN) who then joined forces to back a no confidence motion against Barnier and his government.

331 MPs out of 577 backed the vote of no confidence and this is the first time since 1962 the French government has fallen.

On Wednesday evening the French government collapsed, and this has plunged France into political turmoil and Barnier will formally resign on Thursday.

Le Pen said, “The choice we have made is to protect the French” and slammed Barnier’s budget plans as “dangerous and unfair.”
