Some people were never born to live in the UK. Some people have that natural itch to want to live in another country, and Gibraltar could be the scratch they’re looking for.

With a similar lifestyle to the Mediterranean and the UK, and with English being the main spoken language, it’s the perfect place for Brits looking to live abroad. And there’s no hassle with visas like everywhere else in Europe. Brits can easily move to Gibraltar, do a Qrops pension transfer, and find employment – it all feels the same as the UK.

Still, we will say that some areas are better than others for affordability.

Read on for some of the cheapest areas in Gibraltar to move to.

The Upper Town

The waterfront can be expensive, we won’t lie. The Upper Town is the perfect setting.

Perched beautifully in the hills above Main Street, this Upper Town area happens to be one of the most budget-friendly property markets in Gibraltar. We will say that the properties are still expensive, but you can get nice apartments for £250,000. You have to remember, the sea isn’t far away and lots of the apartments have sea views!

Some homes might need a bit more than just TLC, however, that’s their appeal. If you are willing to invest the effort, you could bag an Upper Town fixer-upper at far below the price of a modern town-centre apartment.

The Upper Town is tranquil and peaceful in contrast to the busy centre and it’s only a few minutes away from Main Street. And because of its position, there is a breathtaking sea view from the homes which are offered at a much lower price compared to other areas.

La Linea (Actually a Spanish Town)

La Linea, near Cadiz, doesn’t need an introduction or a mention. Sitting next to La Linea and actually a Spanish town, this delightful little town is the place for you to live if you want Gibraltar close by with more Spanish life thrown in. And the fact it’s so close to the beautiful Cadiz is even better.

Despite the fact it is quite affordable compared to Gibraltar, La Linea does have its distinct charm that might attract more people. Looking for better places or having more options to live on a budget? Finding properties in La Linea is a better solution. And because it’s a remote Spanish town that isn’t as well known, you’ll find the prices for eating and drinking out are so cheap.

Being so close to Gibraltar is a massive bonus – you get the best of both worlds. Gibraltar does have an expensive housing market that more inland, remote places in Spain don’t have. The average house sells for €1,272 per square meter in La Linea.

Chatham Views

Chatham Views is one of the more affordable areas in Gibraltar. Chatham Views is one of the most recent additions to the western residential hub. If you like modern home designs with every essential amenity, this is the place to be. Although it’s more affordable for Gibraltar, it’s still expensive here.

Situated just a short distance from the Rock’s famous tunnels and the northern side of town, this area has modern apartments at a lower price than what is considered luxury. The buildings themselves are more practical than flashy but offer good, looked-after homes at a price that’s much lower than the marina or South District.

It’s also a bonus that it’s near important services like supermarkets and schools. You can pretty much get to everywhere you need from Chatham Views.

Property is not the cheapest in Gibraltar. You do need more of a big budget compared to some places in mainland Spain. Still, the worth is 100% worth it and you can find affordable options if you look in the right area.
