Heathrow Airport has issued a Christmas travel warning as around 100 flights have been cancelled as 70mph winds are to hit the UK on Sunday.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for strong winds and as a result ferries have been forced to make cancellations between Scotland and Northern Ireland on Saturday.

Heathrow Airport said that due to “strong winds and airspace restrictions” a “small number” of flights have been cancelled, this “will ensure the vast majority of passengers can still safely travel as planned.”

The BBC reported that around 100 flights have been cancelled on Sunday and 80 of these are British Airways, which are mainly short-haul domestic flights to Europe.

A spokesperson for British Airways said, that due to “adverse weather” there is “restrictions” on some flights which has led to a “small number of cancellations” and passengers will be offered “refund options.”

BA added, “We’re offering free flight changes for those customers booked on short-haul services who don’t wish to travel this weekend, and we will be offering rebooking and refund options as always to those whose journeys are disrupted as a result of the restrictions.”

Air traffic control services, NATs, said that “due to adverse weather, temporary air traffic restrictions are in place at Heathrow.”

They added, “Restrictions of this sort are only ever applied to maintain safety.”
