The Home Secretary is set to lay out proposals to tighten migrant law to set out new conditions for asylum seekers wanting indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Last week the Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said he make sure that migrants will have to apply for visa’s every five years.

Sir Keir Starmer hit out at Farage accusing his policies of being “racist” and that indefinite leave to remain (ILR) will still be set by Labour.

Shabana Mahmood will unveil proposals that migrants will not be allowed benefits and will have to work and pay national insurance under the ILR scheme.

It is expected that Mahmood will say, “patriotism, a force for good, is turning into something smaller, something more like ethno-nationalism.”

She will discuss securing Britain’s borders for fair migration and safer streets which lead to an “open, generous, tolerant” UK, adding that MPs will not “always like what I do.”

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said Mahmood plans are “watered down copy” of the Tories plans.

He said, “This is the same Labour Government that scrapped the Rwanda deterrent and then lost control of our borders. Only the Conservatives have a detailed and deliverable plan in our Deportation Bill. That is how you restore control, not more gimmicks.”
