Around a dozen homes have been evacuated after workers found “radioactive” materials in bin bags close to a primary school in Hammersmith, West London.

A worker was clearing a house which belongs to “hoarders” in the West London suburb when they found the bin bags.

Two workers took the bags to scrap dealers who told them it is “radioactive” after they were scanned, and the police and emergency crews were called at around 7pm on Thursday.

Police evacuated around a dozen homes as a precaution on Thursday evening and residents were not allowed to enter the street.

A cleaner called George told the Metro, “There is so much stuff in there. Every room is filled with items – they haven’t thrown anything away for years.

“I took one load of bin bags and rubbish to the tip and when they scanned it they said I couldn’t leave it here because it was radioactive. I don’t even remember what was in them there was so much rubbish. I didn’t know what to do, but I had to go back to the house.”
