The Hungarian Foreign Minister has told reporters at the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum that if Ukraine joins NATO this will trigger “World War III.”

Peter Szijjarto told reporters on the sidelines at the forum that Hungary has always warned against confrontation between NATO and Russia.

Szijjarto said, “In case Ukraine is accepted as a member of NATO under the current circumstances, it would mean the outbreak of a World War III.

“We have always argued against a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO to be provoked.”

The deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has previously said that “prudence” on NATO’s part might prevent destruction for the world.

He also warned that by 2034 Ukraine will “no longer exist” as a result of joining NATO, he told aif.ru in an interview.

Medvedev’s statement comes as the former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in June that Ukraine is on an “irreversible path” to join the alliance.

A senior NATO official said, “We fully support Ukraine’s right to choose its own security arrangements and decide its own future, free from outside interference. Ukraine’s future is in NATO.

“We welcome the concrete progress Ukraine has made since the Vilnius Summit on its required democratic, economic, and security reforms.

“As Ukraine continues this vital work, we will continue to support it on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.”

NATO said they will “be in a position to extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the Alliance when Allies agree and conditions are met.”

Medvedev said, “The actions that Russia’s opponents have been taking against us for years, expanding the alliance … take NATO to the point of no return.”

The staunch Kremlin insider said that Moscow has not threatened NATO, he added, “Russia … has no intention of attacking alliance member countries, and certainly does not aim to turn their populations into fine radioactive dust.”
