Salalah Port, situated in the Dhofar Governorate of Oman, serves as a vital hub for oil storage and bunkering activities on the Arabian Sea.
Recently, this strategic port faced a significant threat from Iran, which launched an attack involving three Iranian drones aimed at the facility.
Omani authorities demonstrated prompt and effective response capabilities, successfully intercepting two drones before they reached their intended targets. However, the third drone managed to breach defences and crash near the port perimeter, landing dangerously close to vital fuel storage tanks.
Initial assessments following the incident revealed that some components of the storage infrastructure sustained damage as a result of the attack.
Fortunately, although fires broke out in specific areas, they were quickly contained by emergency response teams, and, importantly, no casualties were reported among port personnel or nearby communities.
As a consequence of the attack, operations at the port were temporarily interrupted, raising concerns about the security and integrity of shipping routes in the region.

In response, the Omani government issued a strong condemnation of the drone strike, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding national assets and ensuring the safety of maritime operations.
This attack represents yet another chapter in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Gulf nations, which has escalated in recent months. It is perceived as a retaliatory measure by Iran following a series of strikes by US and Israeli forces in the region. The incident not only heightens tensions in the Middle East but also poses additional challenges to global shipping and energy security, as disruptions in such key maritime routes can have far-reaching implications for international trade and stability.
“A security source reported that several drones were shot down, while others struck fuel tanks at the port of Salalah,” the Oman News Agency says, adding that no casualties were reported.
Private maritime security company Vanguard Tech reports the suspension of the port’s operations after the attack on its southern section.
