On Wednesday the Labour Party have vowed to fix 1 million potholes annually if they win the general election next month.

Labour has said by delaying the A27 bypass this will allow £320 million on costs and repairs across the UK.

Speaking to Sky News the Shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said, “The Conservatives have left Britain’s roads plagued with potholes and have sat back as car insurance costs have spiralled out of control.

“Labour is the only party truly on the side of drivers. Our plan will fix up to a million more potholes every year, saving drivers hundreds of pounds in lower repair costs, and will crack down on soaring car insurance costs.

We will make our roads safer for all who use them and remove the barriers which bog down our planning system, speeding up infrastructure improvements and cutting costs for taxpayers.

Haigh slammed the Tories as they have “underinvested” in infrastructure for the road network across the UK.

She said that due to the poor road infrastructure and the lack of maintenance this is costing drivers more money with higher insurance costs, she admitted that car thefts also contributes to higher costs.

Labour estimates that pothole damage is costing drivers nearly £500 with damage to their cars worth an estimated £250.

She said, “Car insurance has risen far faster in this country than it has in our European counterparts.”

The Prime Minister said on Wednesday as part of the Conservative manifesto that he pledges £8.3 billion to “fill potholes and resurface roads.
