Polling from since the campaign got underway suggests that those intending to vote Labour are the most excited about the upcoming general election “as an opportunity to change things in the UK”.

Contrary to some commentary, Savanta’s research suggests a high degree of excitement among Labour voters (71%) and 18-34 year old’s (59%) ahead of polling day.

The wider UK public is much more split (47% excited, 46% not excited), and in particular over 55’s (62%) are more likely to say they aren’t excited about the upcoming election to change things, than they are excited (34%).

The UK public are also much more likely to believe the election will have a “material impact on mine and my family’s life” (50%), than not (31%), whatever the result.

Labour (60%) voters are more likely to say the election results will have an impact on their life compared to Conservative (49%) voters.

Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta said, “A narrative appears to be taking hold that this election will be defined by apathy, but our research suggests that isn’t the case, with very high proportions of Labour supporters and younger people excited about the vote.”

“That isn’t the same necessarily as excitement about what is on offer, and it may well be the case that lots of voters are just particularly keen on some form of change. But our findings counter those would say the UK public don’t care about this election or think it will have a tangible impact on their lives.”
