New polling from Savanta shows that former Prime Minister Liz Truss is by far the least favourable politician with the UK public, a day before the much-anticipated launch of her new platform, Popular Conservatism.

Truss is hoping to use the event to make the case to the public to “restore democratic accountability to Britain and deliver popular conservative policies,” alongside leading right-wing figures including Jacob Rees-Mogg and Lee Anderson. Nigel Farage is also set to attend.

But the Popular Conservatism movement could struggle to gain traction with due to unpopularity of its leader.

Compared with a number of frontline politicians tracked by Savanta including James Cleverly (-17%), Boris Johnson (-25%), Rishi Sunak (-27%) and Suella Braverman (-31%) Truss comes out bottom – with a net favourability score of just -54%.

Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta said, “Our research shows that many ideas associated with free market Conservatism are popular with the UK public. One of their main advocates right now – Liz Truss – is not.

“It is ironic that Popular Conservatism couldn’t find a more unpopular spokesperson if they actively tried.”

Even among Conservative voters – the key audience for the launch of her campaign – Truss’ favorability numbers are very low, at -53% among those who voted for the party in 2019.
