In a significant development regarding the investigations into alleged sexual misconduct, Sir Mark Rowley, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, has announced that UK law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing full access to the extensive files of the late Jeffrey Epstein.
This request is directed to US authorities and is integral to ongoing inquiries into Epstein’s activities and connections in the UK.
In recent months, the US Department of Justice has been methodically releasing documents concerning Epstein’s crimes, a convicted paedophile whose transgressions have sparked multiple investigations.
However, many of these documents remain partially redacted, obscuring critical details that UK police officers believe are necessary for their assessment.
Sir Mark Rowley underscored the urgency of obtaining unredacted materials and original copies of the files, stating, “This is crucial for us to properly review a range of suggested sexual allegations and to assess which, if any, warrant a criminal investigation.”
This call for full access comes in the wake of recent arrests involving high-profile figures, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Peter Mandelson, both detained on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
They have since been released under investigation while vehemently denying any wrongdoing.
Speaking on US TV, Rowley said: “Of course, there’s a big body of that evidence … in the United States in all those files and at some stage we’re going to need the unredacted evidence.
“We need the original copy, and where it came from, and that’s going to be necessary if we get to the stage of court cases.”
The involvement of such notable personalities heightens the stakes of the investigations and adds complexity to the inquiries being conducted by the Metropolitan Police.
The Mirror reported that Sir Mark told ABC News: “With Virginia Guiffre, we did four of those interviews with her … and those interviews didn’t give us any evidence or any allegations of sexual offending or trafficking that we could investigate in the UK. That’s why that investigation didn’t go forward.
“Those investigations all go wherever the evidence takes them, quite comfortable with investigating sort of famous or powerful people.
“I think it’s really important for policing to do that, that sense of operating without fear or favour. The law applies equally to everyone, and those cases will go, say, wherever the evidence leads us to.”
Further complicating matters, Commissioner Rowley indicated that the police are scrutinising documents that Mountbatten-Windsor may have provided to Epstein during his tenure as a British trade envoy.
This examination includes any substantiated sexual allegations, particularly those brought forth by Virginia Giuffre, who has publicly accused Epstein and his associates of various offences. The emergence of relevant evidence could potentially bolster the ongoing investigations.
The Metropolitan Police have reiterated the importance of international collaboration in navigating these intricate inquiries.
