In order to work together on technical innovation, MTN Group and Huawei have inked a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Joint Innovation Technology Lab.
The lab will be established in MTN Group’s South African headquarters to act as an impartial hub for cooperation across the continent’s digital ecosystem, speeding up the creation, implementation, and uptake of cutting-edge digital solutions.
Senior delegations from MTN and Huawei attended the signing ceremony at MWC Barcelona, Spain.
Using this, both businesses will concentrate their R&D efforts on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, 5G and beyond, and digital financial services.

Along with tackling the particular difficulties encountered in Africa, such as expanding energy efficiency and affordability and bolstering network coverage in remote regions, it also seeks to shorten the time it takes for MTN’s goods and services to reach market.
In order to guarantee that the solutions created truly solve problems in the real world, promote significant digital transformation, and advance sustainable development in Africa, MTN’s operational teams will also actively engage in the innovation process.

The Lab, according to Mazen Mroué, group chief technology and information officer, is an investment in the expansion of Africa’s digital ecosystem rather than just a collaboration between two businesses.

“We believe collaboration is essential for developing solutions that truly meet the continent’s needs, and this Lab will pave the way for a more inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous future for Africa,” Mroué said.

Li Peng, corporate senior vice president and president of ICT Sales & Service at Huawei, stated that the company will keep innovating alongside MTN to make sure they have the goods and services needed to effectively service the continent of Africa.

“This will not only give MTN a competitive edge in terms of network quality, user experience, and rapid deployment but also help MTN achieve its business objectives. This newly established lab will help supercharge both MTN’s R&D as well as Africa’s digital economy, bringing more prosperity to the African continent,” Peng said.
