The NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has issued a warning to Moscow any attack on the Baltics will lead to a “reaction” that will be “devastating.”

This comes as Russia warned the Baltic states will be the “first to suffer” with any direct clash between NATO and Moscow, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Director Sergey Naryshkin said in April.

Countries along the eastern flank have all warned of Russia’s escalating threats and Moscow has warned that any aggression from NATO against them or even Belarus will have severe consequences for the Baltic nations.

Naryshkin said, “They should understand, but do not yet understand, that in the event of aggression by the North Atlantic Alliance against (Russia and Belarus), damage will be done, of course, to the entire NATO bloc, but to a greater extent, the first to suffer will be the bearers of such ideas among the political circles of Poland and the Baltic countries.”

Russia claims that Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have all shown “high aggressiveness” towards Moscow.

Naryshkin accused Poland and the Baltics of “constantly rattling their weapons.”

During a news conference on Wednesday, the NATO Secretary General warned, “When it comes to the Baltic region, but this is also true for the Black Sea and for other NATO areas, there is the constant threat of attacks on our critical undersea infrastructure.”

Rutte then said NATO’s “reaction will be devastating” should Russia attack the Baltic states.
