Friedrich Merz, who is likely to be the next German Chancellor has said NATO in “its current form” could soon be finished.

Europe will likely be taking care of their own defence and the US will not be a part of Europe’s solution should war break out.

Despite the UK having left the European Union a new Europe military pact will involve Britain.

Merz’s party won more votes than all other parties in Germany over the weekend and he said that the US President Donald Trump “does not care much about the fate of Europe.”

Merz added, “My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA.”

The NATO Summit will be held in the Hague, from 24 to 26 June this year, but the likely German leader said he does not if we “would still be talking about NATO in its current form or whether we will have to establish an independent European defence capability much more quickly” at that time.

Merz said Europe is under “massive pressure from two sides” this puts Trump in the same camp as Russia.
