Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that a ground invasion of Iran could become a necessary step to dismantle the current Islamic regime.
He asserts that Iran is currently at its “weakest point,” a conclusion drawn from the ongoing military operations known as Operation Epic Fury, which has been underway for four weeks.
During a press conference, Netanyahu emphasised the need for a “ground component” in any military strategy aimed at overthrowing the regime and securing vital strategic assets located within Iranian territory.
Reports have surfaced that former President Donald Trump is weighing the possibility of offering substantial support for such an operation, which could include the deployment of thousands of U.S. troops to assist Israeli forces in their mission.
One area under consideration for troop deployment is Kharg Island, a crucial strategic point that could bolster the effectiveness of allied military efforts.
Analysts suggest that a successful operation could pave the way for the removal of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. If removed, there is speculation that he could be succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei; however, it’s important to note that Mojtaba has remained out of the public eye and has not made any official appearances.
In the United Kingdom, Defence Secretary John Healey has publicly stated that the UK government has resisted calls from some factions to engage directly in offensive military operations against Iran.
Instead, the UK has committed to enhancing its defensive support for Gulf states, recognising the deteriorating security situation in the region. Healey pointed out that Iran’s recent pattern of attacking energy infrastructure represents a significant escalation of hostilities, which poses a serious threat to regional stability and security.
In recent days, Iranian forces have escalated their attacks on various energy sites, including a significant strike on a Saudi oil refinery, assaults on Qatari gas facilities, and attacks on two refineries in Kuwait. These actions are widely seen as retaliatory measures in response to Israeli airstrikes targeting the South Pars gas field, a critical energy site in Iran.
On the ground in the Middle East, British military forces are already actively engaged in efforts to contain Iranian threats.
The Royal Air Force (RAF) has been conducting defensive sorties aimed at intercepting Iranian drones operating in the Gulf region. Furthermore, UK air defence systems are currently deployed to protect key infrastructure in Saudi Arabia from potential Iranian attacks, highlighting the growing concern over the security of critical energy resources and regional stability as tensions continue to rise.
