The Treasury Minister James Murray has said people who earn less than £3,000 will not have to fill out a self-assessment tax return.

Murray said there will be a new and simpler online form people will be able to access to declare their earnings for self-employed work, this will not affect how much tax is owed.

He said that this will allow people to have more time to spend on their side hustle instead of spending needless time “filling out tax returns.”

Murray told The Sun, “From selling old games to creating content on social media, we are changing the way HMRC works to make it easier for Brits to make the very most of their entrepreneurial spirit.

“Taking hundreds of thousands of people out of filing tax returns means less time filling out forms and more time for them to grow their side-hustle.”

HMRC’s current rules for those that earn more than £1,000 a year from doing online work or dog walking or tutoring will have to pay tax, meaning they have to fill out a self-assessment tax return, if you earn less than this then there is no tax and it does not need to be declared.

HMRC has also announced that they are set to trial new tools to improve customer service.
