The US Pentagon chief has confirmed during a briefing on Wednesday in Rome there “is evidence” North Korean troops are in Russia.
The US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said that Moscow is planning to use thousands of North Korean troops in Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.
Pyongyang’s troops will fight alongside Russian forces in various locations inside Ukraine, the Pentagon chief did reveal how many North Korean fighters are in Russia.
Austin said, “There is evidence that there are DPRK (North Korean) troops in Russia. What exactly they are doing? Left to be seen. These are things that we need to sort out.”

CNN reports, Austin added, “If they’re a co-belligerent, their intention is to participate in this war on Russia’s behalf, that is a very, very serious issue, and it will have impacts not only on in Europe — It will also impact things in the Indo Pacific as well.”
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov said that the first set of North Korean troops will arrive in the Kursk region some time on Wednesday.
The War Zone reported Budanov saying Ukrainian forces who started their incursion in the Kursk region of Russia on 6 August will engage in fighting soon.
Budanov said on Tuesday, “We are waiting for the first units tomorrow in the Kursk direction.”
The North Korean troops will help to protect the Russian region from Ukrainian forces, it is unknown how many soldiers there will be, but previously he stated the first group could be around 2,600.
Budanov, added, “We will see after a couple of days.”
There are grave fears that North Korea could be compensated with “technologies related to nuclear weapons.”
South Korea’s permanent representative to the UN, Hwang Joon-kook said North Korea will be expecting a “generous payment” from Putin for sending thousands of troops to fight in Russia’s full-scale war with Ukraine.
Hwang warned, “North Korea expects generous payment from Moscow for its military involvement. This could include both financial and military assistance, as well as technologies related to nuclear weapons.”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday that North Korea fighting Vladimir Putin’s was in Ukraine will mark a “significant escalation.”
