The energy broker Bionic has been brought into question for their recent behaviour when procuring renewal energy contracts on behalf of businesses.
As part of a recent feature, BBC Watchdog discussed Bionic and the ‘sneaky’ tactics they have been using in order to lock businesses into energy contracts that may not be suitable for them.
According to energy litigation experts, Business Energy Claims, this scenario is occurring more frequently than businesses probably realise, with customers of Bionic routinely contacting the Claims firm to explain that they have been tied into a renewal energy contract without any prior knowledge or communication being received.
As discussed within the segment, Bionic routinely have businesses electronically sign their “Do It For You” Contract when they procure their original energy contracts, allowing Bionic to sign any renewal contracts on behalf of the business that they deem appropriate within a set timeframe.
BBC Watchdog highlighted that Bionic have committed to sending communication of the renewal quote via email and text messages (where applicable); however, the businesses that have contacted Business Energy Claims about this issue claim they have not received any renewal quote information and the first time they have been made aware of the renewal energy contract is when it has been locked in by Bionic. BEC estimates that roughly two thirds of its recent enquiries reference issues with Bionic in some way shape or form.
Whilst Bionic claim to have committed to informing businesses of any obtained renewal quotes and allowing them time to object to the contract, as per the “Do It For You” terms and conditions, it was alleged by BBC Watchdog that this was not always undertaken, and businesses were not aware of the renewal contracts that had been agreed on their behalf.

“A solicitor quoted as part of BBC Watchdog’s investigation advised businesses to contact the energy ombudsman with any complaints, however, in our experience, the ombudsman does not offer the level of redress sought by businesses and is only applicable for microbusinesses.
“This is not sufficient, and we urge any businesses who are unhappy with their energy contracts to contact Business Energy Claims to see how we can help on a more personal level.”
