Roll by ADP’s fast facts

Our rating: 3.7 out of 5
Starting price: $39/mo. base fee + $5/person/mo.
Key features:

  • Unlimited payroll runs.
  • Multiple deposit options.
  • Automatic tax deductions and filing.

Roll by ADP is an intuitive chat-based payroll app that lets you process payroll with just a text message. The tool does not require any technical know-how and is available in both iOS and Android, allowing you to pay your employees even on the go.

Roll by ADP’s pricing

Just like the app itself, Roll by ADP has a pretty straightforward pricing: $39 per month plus $5 for every additional employee. You get unlimited payroll runs in all 50 states, new hire reporting, automatic deductions, wage garnishments, off-cycle payments and an AI-driven error check in real time. Roll by ADP has a three-month free trial and no long-term contracts.

Roll by ADP’s key features

Chat-based commands

This is Roll by ADP’s unique feature not found in other payroll processing software. Simply type the command, and the app will do it for you within a few minutes. Although some of its commands have extra steps, most are straightforward. Some of its chat commands include:

  • Run payroll.
  • Change payroll.
  • Give (employee’s name) a raise.
  • Set up a direct deposit.
  • Update phone number.

Payroll processing

Roll by ADP offers automatic pay runs, so you don’t have to process payroll yourself. It also sends reminders a few days before payday. Additionally, Roll by ADP allows you to pay both employees and contractors in a single pay run. If you decide to pay contractors outside the pay cycle, the app has an off-cycle payment feature to do this.

Fast payments

Unlike some payroll providers, Roll by ADP has a next-day direct deposit option. In case you want to pay someone much faster, Roll also has same-day payments. If you prefer to pay by check, the app calculates earnings, taxes and deductions based on built-in rules that cover all 50 states.

Payroll reporting

Roll by ADP automatically emails an Excel version of your payroll summary for each pay period. It also sends a report to your accountant or bookkeeper. Aside from this, the app accepts report requests. It can generate reports for YTD payroll, one pay period, a single employee and more.

HR features

Although Roll by ADP’s HR features aren’t as extensive as Gusto’s or Rippling’s, it’s quite impressive for a mobile payroll software. By simply typing “Hire (employee name),” the app will give you a step-by-step instruction and all the necessary information you need to create an employee profile. Some of these details include the new hire’s name, employment start date, SSN, address and mobile phone number.

  • Unlimited pay runs with automatic tax payments and filings.

Roll by ADP cons

  • No time tracking capability.
  • Memorizing the chat commands might take time.

One of ADP’s downsides is its limited third-party integration. If you need a payroll solution with a wide range of third-party integrations, we recommend Gusto. Its powerful API allows you to connect with most third-party apps, including Slack, Asana, ActiveCampaign, Carta and ChartHop. You can also scale with Gusto, as it offers multiple plans. The pricing starts at $40 per month plus $6 per employee monthly.
