A Russian MP has said the United States and its allies have long sought to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

Sergey Mironov, chairman of the party and leader of the ‘A Just Russia – Patriots – For Truth’ a faction in the Russian State Duma has said the West now has a responsibility to ensure that the country does not turn into a stronghold of international terrorism.

Mironov told LondonLovesBusiness.com, “No sooner had the militants of the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham seized power in Syria than the United States began to consider removing it from the list of terrorist organizations.

“This is, of course, a formality, because no status prevented the Americans from cooperating with them earlier in order to overthrow Assad. Now the goal has been achieved. But it is the United States and its allies that have a direct responsibility to ensure that peace reigns in Syria and the country does not turn into a stronghold of international terrorism.

“This is what Iraq was for many years after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein by the Americans, which led to the emergence of the IS group. The overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya also did not end well for the country and for the world—the war continues to this day.”

He noted that the US military still illegally controls large oil and gas fields in the areas they occupy in eastern Syria.

He added, “This expropriation of natural resources has caused serious damage to the Syrian economy, and the ‘opposition’ that came to power in the country understands this well—it needs petrocurrency no less than Assad.

“I do not exclude that if the Americans do not give up the deposits, they will have to flee from Syria, as from Afghanistan—the Syrian ‘jihadists’ are not much inferior to the Taliban in their determination.

“He expressed confidence that Russia will maintain good relations with the people of Syria, as they have with the people of Afghanistan. “In both countries, Russia helped a lot and selflessly—we developed the economy and the social sphere. People still remember it with gratitude.”
