South Korea has been warned to “prepare for the worst” as there are grave concerns Vladimir Putin could send “nuclear weapons” to the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Putin travelled to North Korea last week and signed a new security assistance package promising to mutual military assistance in the event Pyongyang or Moscow is attacked.

A former South Korean politician Kim Sang-woo warned that Seoul must prepare for war with Jong Un as result of last week’s meeting.

He said that if Putin send missiles or even nuclear weapons to North Korea then Seoul has no choice but “to send weapons to Ukraine.”

Speaking to DW Sang-woo said, “Kim has been emboldened by Putin’s support and we in the South must be prepared for a worst-case scenario, although we must also remember that this is a relationship of desperation on both sides.

We just do not know if Kim believes he is strong enough to attack, if Russia will support him and whether he will resort to nuclear weapons.

The US, the West and our other allies must continue to do what they have been doing, supporting us and warning the North what will happen in the event of a war on the peninsula.

“And if Putin does send more weapons to the North, then we have to send weapons to Ukraine. There is no choice.”

He warned that Seoul has to be very careful as “we just don’t know if the North would use nuclear weapons,” Sang-woo added, “the situation is extremely concerning.”

This comes as in April Jong Un sent a cryptic message to South Korea, “Now is the time to be more thoroughly prepared for a war than ever before,” this raised alarm bells with Seoul and the US.

Sang-woo said, “The big question is around the commitment of the US to the security of the South and while I believe we can still count on Washington, there are too many variables about what that support might look like, especially after the elections in November.

“The big problem, of course, is that the North now has nuclear weapons and long-range missiles and the South does not.

“In terms of conventional weapons, the South has the advantage of modern weapons systems that would stand up well against the North’s obsolete equipment, but we just do not know if the North would use nuclear weapons in the event of a conflict.”

On Monday North Korea sent Washington a warning that Russia has the “right for any kind of retaliatory strike” as the US is expanding their military assistance to Ukraine.

A leading North Korean military official Pak Jong Chon said that Moscow has to the right to retaliate against the US as Washington is continuing with their “proxy war” with Russia.

The North Korean military official warned the US of a “new world war,” according to state media KCNA.
