Spotify may soon make it easier to organize playlists on mobile devices. A new report suggests the music streaming service is working on bringing playlist folder management to its mobile app, something users have been asking for for years.

Playlist folders are not new to Spotify. The feature has existed since 2010 and allows users to group multiple playlists under a single folder for easier management. However, it currently has a limitation. While playlist folders sync across devices, users can only create and manage folders using Spotify’s desktop app or web player.

What’s changing and when?

Android Authority has spotted new code strings in version 9.1.34.12 of the Spotify app that suggest folder management may soon make its way to phones. The findings indicate that the feature will let users create and manage playlist folders directly in the app.

The code hints that users may be able to create new folders using the “Create” button or through the app’s “Your Library” tab. Once the feature arrives, likely in a future release, users will be able to organize their playlists on the go, making it easier to keep large music libraries sorted without relying on a computer.

Which folder management features will be available in the app?

The teardown points to options to move playlists into folders, remove them, and reorganize collections. In addition, the code suggests users may be able to rename folders or delete them entirely from their phones. If a folder is deleted, Spotify could display a warning message asking users to confirm the action, since removing a folder may also delete its stored playlists.

As with most features uncovered in app teardowns, folder management is still in development and may change before launch. If Spotify rolls it out, it could finally solve one of the biggest complaints about managing playlists on mobile devices.
