The Game Awards 2025 dropped a massive surprise for Star Wars fans with the reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. It’s a brand-new single-player action RPG set in the fan-favourite Old Republic era. It is headed to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, though given the timeline, we might see it on whatever consoles come next, too.

The debut trailer, running on Unreal Engine 5, looked incredible and confirmed the feature we all want: the ability to shape your story by choosing between the Light and Dark sides. But the real hype comes from the team building it.

The game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios under the leadership of Casey Hudson. If you know your RPG history, you know Hudson directed the original Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and the Mass Effect trilogy. Essentially, the architect of the genre’s golden age is returning to the universe he helped define.

Release timeline questions and what comes next

Naturally, people immediately started asking, “When can we play it?” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier threw some cold water on the excitement, suggesting that a 2030 release date might actually be “optimistic” since the studio is so new. That sparked plenty of worry that we wouldn’t see this game for another console generation.

Hudson was quick to jump on social media to clear the air. He pushed back against the idea of a 2030-plus wait, promising fans that while it is early days, the game will definitely launch before the end of the decade.

This matters because Star Wars has been missing a deep, choice-driven RPG for a very long time. For players, Fate of the Old Republic feels like a spiritual homecoming. The takeaway for now is patience. It is going to be a long wait, but with Hudson back at the helm, it looks like Lucasfilm Games is prioritizing quality and legacy over a quick cash grab. Until then, we will just have to wait for updates – and maybe replay the originals one more time.
