The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has ordered an emergency COBRA meeting as the situation in the between Israel and Iran is a “fast-moving situation.”
Starmer has now arrived back in the UK after attending the G7 Summit in Canada and will discuss the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
Downing Street has insisted that the government is focussed on “de-escalation” rather than escalating the situation in Iran and the wider region.
A Downing Street spokesperson was asked if Starmer is confident that Donald Trump will not involve US forces, he replied, “You have the PM’s words but the position remains that we want to de-escalate the situation, we want to de-escalate rather than escalate.
We are clear that de-escalation is the right outcome for the Middle East, we are conscious, as the PM has said, that this has an impact on the lives of people in the United Kingdom.
That is why the Prime Minister’s been focused in recent days at the G7 on de-escalation and we will continue to be focused on de-escalation.
He added, “This is an extremely fast-moving situation and we are working with partners to reiterate the need to return to diplomacy.”
