Rebel MPs have warned the Prime Minister the vote on welfare reforms will be treated as a confidence vote.

Over 100 Labour MPs have revealed they will reject Sir Keir Starmer’s plans to cut disability benefits even though they have been threatened with losing the whip.

MPs have privately told the Independent that Starmer could end up being forced out of Downing Street.

Next Tuesday ministers will vote on the welfare reforms and more than 100 are considering to rebel against Starmer.

This comes as last night the Parliamentary Labour Party and Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall had a heated meeting with MPs.

In total 108 MPs have called for Starmer to pause the welfare reforms after the there was an amendment.

The government will make £5 billion a year in savings by reducing personal independence payments (Pip) for people who have disabilities.

One senior MP told the newspaper, “The sharks are circling around the Prime Minister” while another added: “the Government hasn’t listened to private concerns.

Another MP said the “government hasn’t listened to private concerns.”

Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden said they will “listen” but is unlikely the changes suggested by the 108 MPs will unlikely be accepted.

McFadden said, “It’s a good package of reforms. I understand some MPs have signed an amendment. We’ll talk to them over the next week or so between now and the vote, but the government believes that the package of reform is put forward is a good package of reform, and hope that colleagues will engage positively with it over the next few days.”

He added that there “is no escaping the need for reform of the welfare system.”
