As the festive season draws near, new research reveals that London drivers are among the most likely in the UK to admit to drink-driving.
A recent survey by Tempcover, the temporary car insurance experts, found that 50% of London drivers admitted to drink-driving at least once, with the breakdown as follows:
- 8.6% admitted to drink-driving several times.
- 28.3% confessed to drink-driving a few times.
- 13.1% admitted to driving once while over the legal limit.
These findings position London as one of the cities with the highest drink-driving rates in the UK, showcasing the concerning trend of both repeated and occasional instances of drink-driving in the capital.
Additionally, the research highlights that many London drivers feel pressured into making dangerous decisions. The survey found:
- 35.1% of drivers in London reported feeling pressured to let someone else drive when unsure about their sobriety.
- 26.7% admitted to feeling pressured to drive despite knowing they were over the legal limit.
When asked about their likelihood of taking risks during the festive period, 43.2% of London drivers revealed that they are more likely to drink and drive during the holiday season compared to other times of the year. This worrying statistic highlights the increased dangers posed by social events and gatherings during the festive period.
Nationwide insights from tempcover’s research

With drink-driving incidents peaking during the festive season, Tempcover is encouraging people to plan ahead and consider Designated Driver Temporary Car Insurance. This short-term solution allows car owners to quickly insure a sober friend or family member to drive their vehicle, ensuring everyone can travel home safely after festive celebrations.
Jake Lambert, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, said, “No one should feel pressured to drive or let someone else drive after drinking. Drink-driving is illegal and dangerous, not only for the driver but for others on the road. Planning ahead and ensuring a sober driver is an easy way to avoid risky decisions this festive season.”
