The Prime Minister has branded as a “desperate liar” as more than 40,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel since Rishi Sunak vowed to “stop the boats.”

On Tuesday the Home Office confirmed that 234 migrants crossed the Channel.

According to Home Office figures migrants crossing the Channel has soared by 40% to an astonishing 10,745 for 2024.

The Conservative Party have said that crossing are down this year compared to last year, however the total numbers this year stands at 10,745 so far compared to 7,610 of the same period in 2023.

Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s shadow paymaster general, said, “Another bare-faced lie from Rishi Sunak has been exposed. Last night, he told the British people that the number of small boat arrivals was coming down.

“But today, we have confirmation from the Home Office itself that small boat arrivals so far in 2024 are at a record high, running more than 40% higher than last year.

“Even worse, we now know that – when Rishi Sunak promised the British people that he would stop the boats – he was telling another lie.

“Exactly 18 months on from that day, 40,000 people have now made the crossing, while he has sat on his hands doing nothing to take on the smuggling gangs. Rishi Sunak has become a desperate liar.

“If a Labour government is elected on 4 July, we will take the action required to tackle this chaos.

“Our new Border Security Command will put to work hundreds of new specialist investigators, officers and prosecutors, using tough new counter-terror powers to smash the gangs making millions from this evil trade.”

Michael Tomlinson, immigration minister, said, “Jonathan Ashworth used Labour’s first day of the general election campaign to confirm that Labour will scrap our Rwanda deterrent.

“Keir Starmer doesn’t have the conviction to stop the boats – he wants an amnesty for illegal immigrants, making us a magnet for every illegal migrant in Europe.

“The choice at the election is clear: choosing a clear plan with bold action for a safer, more secure future with Rishi Sunak in an increasingly uncertain world, or go back to square one with Keir Starmer and the same old Labour who will stop the flights, not the boats.”
