As the roads get busier with Christmas travel and festive errands, a new survey from the temporary car insurance experts at Tempcover reveals that many British drivers are at greater risk, with most unable to identify common driving offences.
The survey asked drivers to correctly identify 11 driving offences from a list of 15, with only 5% of respondents able to correctly identify all 11.
This knowledge gap isn’t just dangerous—it can be expensive, with fines of up to £1,000. Some of the offences that drivers were least aware of include:
Beeping your horn when stationary – up to £1,000 fine
73% of drivers were unaware this is an offence, yet it can be a common reaction in frustrating Christmas traffic jams. If caught, drivers could face a fine of up to £1,000. Staying patient behind the wheel and avoiding unnecessary horn use while stationary could save more than just stress this holiday season.
Flashing headlights to warn other drivers – up to £1,000 fine
60% of motorists didn’t realise that flashing headlights to warn others about things like speed cameras is against the law. While you might feel like you’re helping fellow drivers this Christmas, breaking this rule could cost you up to £1,000.
Using your phone as a sat-nav improperly – £200 and 6 penalty points
With more than half of drivers (53%) unaware that using an unfixed phone as a sat-nav is an offence, many risk a £200 fine and 6 penalty points. Christmas is a time for long journeys sometimes to unfamiliar destinations, so double-check your sat-nav is mounted correctly to avoid fines and points on your licence.
Littering from your car – £150 fine
A surprising 44% of drivers are unaware that tossing rubbish out of the window, such as discarded takeaway wrappers or gift packaging, is illegal. This offence could result in a £150 fine—a not-so-merry expense this Christmas.
Claire Wills-Mckissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, emphasises that drivers should take extra care on the roads this Christmas.
“The festive period often brings increased traffic and challenging weather, which can lead to unexpected risks on the road. Simple mistakes like not mounting your sat-nav properly, flashing your headlights to warn others of speed cameras, or even using your horn when stationary can lead to fines and unexpected penalties.
“Whether you’re heading home for Christmas, borrowing a car, or visiting from abroad, there are a few ways to stay safer on the roads. Set up your sat-nav correctly, avoid distractions, and make sure you know the ins and outs of the car you’re driving. If you are visiting the UK for Christmas, check the rules of the road, which do change regularly.
“Most importantly, plan ahead, drive cautiously, and ensure you have the right insurance in place to make your journeys stress-free this Christmas.”
