In a significant move, Wendy’s New Zealand has been acquired by the American franchise operating giant Flynn Group for an undisclosed sum. The popular American burger franchise was put up for sale in 2022 by the West Auckland-based Lendich family, who had been operating the business since 1988.

Flynn Group, renowned as the largest franchise operator in the world, announced today the acquisition of Wendco (NZ) – the sole franchisee of the Wendy’s brand in New Zealand. The acquisition marks a strategic expansion of Flynn Group’s international presence, following their recent purchase of the master license for Wendy’s and Pizza Hut in Australia.

Wendy’s New Zealand boasts a substantial footprint, with more than 20 restaurants employing 500 staff across the country. The acquisition presents Flynn Group with a compelling opportunity to further its growth ambitions internationally and strengthen its partnership with the beloved Wendy’s brand.

“The acquisition of the Wendy’s New Zealand business represented a compelling opportunity to continue our growth ambitions internationally and to expand our strong partnership with the much-loved Wendy’s brand,” said Ron Bellamy, Chief Operating Officer of Flynn Group.

Bellamy expressed the group’s honor in carrying forward the proud 35-year tradition of delighting customers established by Wendco New Zealand. He emphasized that the immediate priority will be to collaborate with the existing team to determine how best to leverage Flynn Group’s scale and capabilities to build upon their success as they embark on this new chapter of growth together.

The Lendich family, who started Wendy’s in New Zealand in 1988, has played a pivotal role in the brand’s success. Danny and Dianne Lendich founded the business, while their daughter Danielle has served as the chief executive. Danielle will continue to support the business through the transition as an advisor to Flynn Group, ensuring a smooth handover.

With its global presence spanning consumer-facing businesses across Applebee’s, Arby’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, and Planet Fitness in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, Flynn Group’s acquisition of Wendy’s New Zealand marks a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy.
