The US President has said on Saturday that he will hit Russia with “major” sanctions only when all NATO countries stop buying oil from Russia, even though he continues to fail on his word.

Turkey has bought 6% of Russian crude in August, Hungary and Slovakia sill buy from Moscow and overall, the European Union is purchasing 6% of crude, the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said.

Trump wrote on the Truth Social media platform, “I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations stop buying oil from Russia.

“As you know, NATO’s commitment to win has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian oil, by some, has been shocking.

“It greatly weakens your negotiating position and bargaining power over Russia. Anyway, I am ready to ‘go’ when you are. Just say when?”

On Saturday the US President insisted that NATO members put 50 to 100% tariffs on China who is the largest importer of Russian oil and gas.

Trump said, “I believe that this, plus NATO, as a group, placing 50% to 100% tariffs on China — to be fully withdrawn after the war with Russia and Ukraine is ended — will also be of great help in ending this deadly, but ridiculous, war.

“China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will break that grip.”

Trump added, “If Nato does as I say, the war will end quickly, and all of those lives will be saved.

“If not, you are just wasting my time, and the time, energy, and money of the United States.”

On 4 September Trump told EU leaders during a call with the “coalition of the Willing” to stop importing oil from Russia.

The British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said, “The UK will not stand idly by as Putin continues his barbaric invasion of Ukraine. His complete disregard for sovereignty has been shown this week when he recklessly sent drones into Nato airspace.

“The security of Nato and Ukraine is crucial to the UK’s security – an integral part of the Prime Minister’s plan for change.

“International action to increase economic pressure on Russia and to cut off critical cash flows, which he desperately needs to pay for this illegal war, is vital.

“These sanctions form the next stage in the UK’s leading efforts to ramp up economic pressure alongside our security support and our work alongside the coalition of the willing for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
