The UK Government, led by National Technology Adviser Dr. Dave Smith, is showcasing its semiconductor expertise at SEMICON Taiwan 2024, with a delegation of 24 British businesses participating in the event starting on September 3. This year’s UK Pavilion is notably larger than last year’s, reflecting the growing prominence of the UK semiconductor sector on the global stage.

The delegation includes a diverse array of companies specializing in key areas such as photonics, quantum technologies, memory, design, and manufacturing equipment. The expanded presence underscores the UK’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and driving innovation in the semiconductor industry.

This initiative aims to leverage the complementary strengths of the UK and Taiwan—where the UK excels in semiconductor research and development (R&D), and Taiwan is a leading force in semiconductor manufacturing. The visit builds on the existing collaboration between the two countries, which includes a second year of a joint R&D program with mutual funding of £10 million.

SEMICON Taiwan, a prominent hub for semiconductor manufacturing, presents an excellent platform for UK and Taiwanese companies to forge new connections and explore opportunities for trade and collaboration. The UK Pavilion’s participation this year includes 15 new high-growth innovative companies, signaling strong potential for expanding trade relations and collaborative ventures between the two markets.

The UK is recognized for its leadership in compound semiconductors, which are crucial for emerging markets such as autonomous vehicles, advanced telecommunications, and green energy technologies. These components play a significant role in achieving net zero targets and fostering technological advancements.

Dr. Dave Smith emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “The presence of these 24 innovative UK businesses at SEMICON Taiwan highlights our strong position in the global semiconductor market and our commitment to advancing technological collaboration with Taiwan. This partnership will drive mutual growth and innovation, benefiting both economies.”

The UK’s expanded presence at SEMICON Taiwan reaffirms its role as a key player in the global semiconductor industry and its dedication to fostering international cooperation in technology and innovation.
