Ukraine came under a “massive Russian attack” on their energy and gas infrastructure to force Kyiv into submission.

Russia fired more than 40 missiles and over 70 attack drones at energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

President Zelensky said on Wednesday, “Another massive Russian attack. It’s the middle of winter, and the target for the Russians remains unchanged: our energy infrastructure.

“Among their objectives were gas and energy facilities that sustain normal life for our people. Over 40 missiles were launched in this attack, including ballistic missiles. At least 30 were destroyed.

“Additionally, more than 70 Russian attack drones were launched overnight. Thanks to our air defense forces and all involved units, we’ve managed to maintain the functionality of our energy system.”

President Zelensky said that Ukraine must strengthen their current air shield capabilities, and that NATO and Washington are still yet to fulfil promises made.

He said, “Promises made by partners at the NATO summit in Washington and within the Ramstein format still remain partially unfulfilled.

“We’ve also discussed licenses for the production of air defense systems and missiles for them, which could serve as one of the effective security guarantees for Ukraine. This is both realistic and necessary to implement.”

He added, “Right now, through the defense of Ukraine, we are determining whether Europe and the democratic world as a whole can reliably and effectively stop wars for the long term.”

Maksym Kozytsky, head of the Regional Military Administration said that the Lviv region was targeted with UAVs and missiles on Wednesday evening through to the morning and critical infrastructure was hit.

Kozytsky wrote on Telegram, “During the morning air raid siren, which lasted from 06:12 to 08:12, the enemy attacked Lviv region with cruise missiles.

“There are hits to two critical infrastructure facilities in Drohobych and Stryi districts. Fortunately, there are no casualties, but damages are observed.”

He added, “The region’s life support systems are operating normally. There are no power outages yet.”

On Wednesday morning Poland scrambled military aircraft as a result of “a massive Russian” missile attack on the territory of Ukraine.

The Polish Ministry of Defense said, “Attention, in connection with the attack by the Russian Federation on facilities located, including in western Ukraine, military aircraft have begun operating in our airspace.”

The Polish Operational Command activated all the forces and means at their disposal and scrambled another pair of fighters, and ground-based air defense.

Radar reconnaissance systems have been put on high alert, the Polish military said they had taken measures aimed at securing the territories bordering the threatened areas.

“The operational Command of the Armed Forces is monitoring the current situation, and subordinate forces and assets remain fully prepared for an immediate response,” the Polish Ministry added.
